¿Para donde vas?

At Jazz Fest on Sunday, the other Clios and I traipsed over to catch the Iguanas on the Fais Do Do Stage. We've been fans since we were both at the Univ. of Virginia in the early 90s, when New Orleans's "Best New Band" (according to New Orleans magazine at the time) came to Charlottesville and provided a welcomed piece of home by playing at a club there.

On Sunday, we were surprised not to see the estimable Derek Huston on stage playing strong and smooth on the saxophone. Instead, there was another guy who (nothing against the guy) just didn't have the magic that Mr. Huston has in concert.

A reliable source we both know who was in the crowd told us that Derek has been unceremoniously canned after 17 years in the band. We are very disappointed. The Iguanas just got less appealing.

That's a damned shame. I love the Iguanas, but that hot horn is gonna be missed.

Derek lived in the sliver by the river. He didn't get flooded, and didn't have to move to Austin.

His kids went to Lusher, as did Doug Garrison's kids. But Doug got flooded out in mid city, and wasn't able to stay.

Pretty much the whole band is based out of Austin right now. My guess is that Derek had no desire to move there.

Damn.

I have every CD, even the out of print ones, like Nuevo Boogaloo. I was gonna take lessons from Doug, until the thing.

Damn.

And if you go to their news page, you only see 4 people.

Damn.

Actually, all of the band, with the exception of Rod (who lived on the West Bank and did not flood) have returned to N.O. The band is not based out of Austin....! Not only will Derek's sound be missed, but his energy certainly will be too.

Sorry. I know that they were based out of Austin for a long, long time between the flood and now.

I don't think he was kicked out...I think he's on tour with another band right now. That's what I was told.

Derek was invited to tour with James Hunter in Nov 06. The Iguanas had 2 dates on the books, so he asked them if he could get a replacement for those two dates. When he returned, he was told that they had a replacement for Dec. This happened again in Jan.... no meetings or discussions...just replaced after 16 years.
I'm sure that he will have many great opportunities (like being in the studio w/Robert Plant 2 weeks ago) as he has created alot of good will in this town.
