Fever

There's some bad stuff going around. I've had a sore throat and fever in the 100 degree range for three and half days, and Berto's had it even worse.

Our future nay-bah James Carville (Oyster scooped everybody on this two days ago) certainly has the fever:

"The quality of life in Uptown New Orleans is as high as anyplace in the country with the parks, universities and restaurants. And Magazine Street is consistently one of the most interesting streets in the United States."

Indeed. We're a miracle.

P.S. As NoPickles points out, however, the T-P's editorials are often not a miracle. Don't ask NoPickles about how easy it is to get to Uptown, though. Hee.

No Country for Old Peeps

Best Ever

1. The Lady Wolfpack of Loyola University New Orleans have advanced to the quarterfinals of the NAIA Division I Basketball tournament. The Pack defeated the tourney's number one seed to get there. This is great for Loyola and great for our city.

2. In today's Crescent City Classic, I finished in under an hour for the first time in my life. I saw the Librarian after the race, who said he "dropped out at mile 5." His "sucktastic" time was still better than mine. I'm impressed. Too bad he's such fan of Devery.

New Orleans Team Begins a Run at the Title

Congratulations to the Lady Wolfpack of Loyola University New Orleans for a big win in the NAIA Tournament. While the NCAA men's teams of our state sit humbly at home, the Lady Wolfpack (along with the Lady Tigers of LSU) are among the elite few still gunning for a national title.

I Leave for a Few Days and WHAT?

Cheesh, y'all.

I go to Boston and NYC for a few days, and you let Steve Gleason retire and Ruth's Chris move back into Orleans Parish?

On the latter issue (let's start with the ugly, so we can end with the pretty), let's remember Ruth's Chris CEO Craig Miller, who abandoned the city of New Orleans in its darkest hour. Miller is opening a location of his overrated, overpriced, stock-tanking restaurant in Harrah's Casino. Miller tries to make Orleanians feel better by letting us know that the former Broad Street location (see pix here) will be given to their corporate foundation (tax-savvy move) so that it can be donated "to the community":

"It will be used for the community and the neighborhood, not for commercial use," Miller said.

Do you realize what he's saying here? "For the community" sounds great, right. NOT. What he's saying is this: "We're certainly not going to let a competitive enterprise move into that building." Wouldn't want to take anything away from the ever-worsening Ruth's Chris bottom line, right?

In the end, who cares, though? That neighborhood already has a world class steakhouse. And Uptown will soon welcome Charlie's back.

I'm not a Harrah's guy anyway--only been there once because one of my best friends was having a big party and wanted to go there after. Now I'm really not going there.

As for Mr. Gleason, I'm happy he's going out on his terms. I'm happy he's marrying a World Class New Orleans Lady this May. I'll have to get in touch with Gail about all this.

I can't top Chef, Ashley, Berto, and GW for commentary on the greatness of Steve Gleason.

Regarding Gleason, here's a request for help from the Internets. After his block of the Atlanta punt on 9/25/2006, Gleason said something to the effect that he felt the whole Dome become part of his being. Or something like that. Does anybody have that exact quote and a link? I wanna get it tattooed on my forehead. Or something like that.

UPDATE: Thanks to Oyster, for pointing out that the focus of evil in NOLA will be located in Harrah's Hotel, not the casino.

This Seems a Bit Premature

The T-P shows us these ACOE maps indicating a radically reduced threat of flooding in the event of a 1 percent hurricane (is that the right way to say it, Tim?)

I don't know, but at this early stage, this map

I really hope the ACOE is right this time.

But I need some time to re-develop trust.

On a related note, the "Mission Accomplished" dollar-meter on the right-hand side of my blog crossed the $500 billion mark in the last couple of days.

Is there a better coach in the NFL than Sean Payton at looking for and signing tight ends?

We tried to trade for Jeremy Shockey. Then we got Billy Miller and Eric Johnson locked down for another year.

Memo to Coach: Please apply the same rigor to signing cornerbacks and linebackers. I'm not sure that Glass Joe qualifies as a signing.

We Found Snow

This weekend, the Clio family was in northern Alabama (AKA Saintseester territory) visiting Clio II at school. As you can see from this pic of Clio IV, we found snow. It was a kick. It was also completely gone by mid-afternoon.

What Steck Said

Aaron Stecker re-signed with the Saints. I am really happy he's sticking with us, and I am in accord with the reasons he gave:

"I just felt like New Orleans is a place where something's gonna happen there, something special," Stecker said. "I've been on a Super Bowl team (in Tampa Bay in 2002), and it felt like the same thing that's happening here. I definitely wanted to stay and be a part of it.

"These last four years I've been in New Orleans, I've had a great time, the people have been great, it's fun to play in the Dome. It just felt right."

I have no comment on the re-signing of Devery Henderson.
